To be great, first be good
November 2, 2011 No CommentsEvery so often, we receive shards of advice that seem sophomoric, yet true. Here’s one that has more depth that it seems: Whatever you may be, be good at what you do.
You can never be great at anything – including, but especially being an online store entrepreneur – unless you are good at it first.
To be good at online marketing is not easy because it’s such a specialized field. It does not follow the same rules as conventional marketing. For one thing, hard sell doesn’t work where online sales is concerned. Use the tactic that pressure sellers use and you are bound to fail.
Look at the most successful online stores. You will hardly find one that look like those ads in the newspapers proclaiming their products to be the best and the greatest. Somehow, this works for print ads, and can also work for TV commercials. Notice how used care salesmen say they have offers that no one should miss, or do without?
Viewers know that the claims are exaggerated, but the used car salesmen still manage to push their products to their markets. Try this same tactic on your online store and the only reaction you will get from browsers is that you are peddling lies.
Good online stores do resort to some gimmickry to attract potential buyers. They use bright imagery and a sense of fun to attract browsers, who can eventually become buyers.
With this path, the good online store can easily become great. This is not a magic formula. It is simply sound online marketing.
