Reviewing your store template

November 23, 2011 No Comments

Many an online business starts off by using a free template with the blanks filled in by the operator. The basics such as the name and the product line appear on the initial or the home page.

This is well and good because there are literally thousands of free templates available. After all, why pay for something which you can get for free, right?

But while there may be thousands of free templates, there are also tens of thousands of templates sold at relatively low cost. These are not only more visually appealing, but are better designed to make the sales process easier.

These premium templates are worth a second look. The small price paid for the use of one has several advantages. For one, they are not as common as the free templates, which means that the chances of another online store in the same line of business using the same template is reduced considerably.

Another advantage is that the premium templates are almost certainly done in the highest resolution possible. This gives them a crystal clear look that the free templates may not provide.

From an aesthetic viewpoint, the premium templates will have the mark of a professional designer. They can be elegant where the freebies will look plain or even cheap. An online store owner who can spare the extra cash would do well to switch to a premium template if he or she is presently using a free template.

Another plus for premium templates is the ability to optimize it for search engines. While some designs that are offered out there for free are already search-engine-friendly, your average premium template allows you to easily make changes to the back-end on a per page basis. This becomes an important factor especially if you want to rank your pages individual in search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing. Among the many items that you need to customize on your page are your title tags, meta description even the alt text for your images.

As the online store operates, the owner may occasionally tweak the look of the site by altering the fonts of the template, or changing the background or foreground colors. But at least the basic look that potential customers find attractive will remain.

If you still have your hesitations about the paid options, just look at it as an investment on the future of your store. Starting on the right foot early will mean getting to that break-even point and on to a more profitable online store earlier.
