Perfecting someone else’s bright idea

December 20, 2011 No Comments

No one can have an exclusive right to a bright marketing idea. Brilliant concepts cannot be patented. The best thing that anyone who develops such magnificent thoughts is to be the first to apply it, and make sure he applies it best.

Otherwise, anyone can come in, study that concept, improve on it, and make the huge income that the innovator should have earned.

Consider multi-level marketing, or MLM. No one can lay claim to have developed this marketing concept, but someone certainly did. That’s why it’s still very much around today, employed by countless companies that sell their wares directly to consumers.

Some MLM companies make millions, provide work for hundreds of thousands of independent sales people, and make end users happy with the affordable, quality goods. Some have been around for decades, while others proved to be nothing more than a flash in the pan for a particular industry, whether it’s household cleaners, jewellery or beauty products.

Online marketing continues to evolve and sales tactics and strategies of selling in the internet are constantly changing. Selling online had been around for a few years before someone thought up of eBay, a global marketplace where anyone could sell anything. As a result, eBay’s founders became young billionaires.

At present, there are a handful of online companies battling to become the world’s top site for gaming, or bulk buying, or flight and hotel reservations.

An entrepreneur of an online store may find himself or herself overwhelmed by the many, many ways that rising industries are taken over seemingly at the blink of an eye. In fact, the rising online superstars are not creating anything totally new in terms of service or sales techniques. All they’re doing is mastering one way of doing things, better than anyone else before them.

Almost a century ago, a brilliant marketing man put it in the right perspective. Build a better mousetrap, he said, and the world is yours.

Neither the late Steve Jobs nor Bill Gates can claim to have invented the computer. But they became two of the richest men in the planet because they took existing ideas and improved on them. For that matter, Henry Ford didn’t invent the automobile, and the Wright brothers did not invent the airplane, either. They simply too took a developing idea of their time and placed their unique stamp upon them.

If you see what seems to be a bright idea for an online business that only needs to be tweaked, then go ahead and alter, revise, and improve on that idea. For all you know, your little brainchild can turn you into an overnight millionaire. It’s happened before and no one can say it won’t happen to you.
