A formula for selling more

December 13, 2011 No Comments

Among door-to-door salesmen, there is one cardinal rule that they must follow if they are to make substantial income. That rule goes thus: the more you see, the more you sell.

Specifically, the more sales calls they make, the greater the chances of selling a lot of whatever it is that they sell. They can be selling hair brushes, toiletries or cookies. It doesn’t matter. The rule works.

But what of online stores? Certainly no one expects entrepreneurs who operate online stores to hit the pavement as well. Door-to-door selling won’t work for online sites at all.

But a slight variation of the old rule should work. The rule for online stores goes thus: the more you’re seen, the more you sell.

Being highly visible is what online stores need, and there are dozens of ways they can achieve this. One way is to tap social network sites like Facebook. The only problem with this is that everyone else is doing it.

Blasting all your friends and relatives and asking them to spread the word about your site may have some positive effect. But this is a big if.

Advertising is a good alternative, but the cost can be prohibitive.

One of the better ways is to resort to what some call below-the-line advertising. Advertise your site but not in conventional print, broadcast or electronic media. Instead, advertise through handouts, brochures and flyers in areas where there is a concentration of probable customers for your store. You can also use bumper stickers, flags, t-shirts and caps.

There are also affordable online advertising options open to you such as pay-per-click campaigns like Google AdWords or Yahoo Search Marketing campaigns. This can mean both text  or display ads in the search results or in their content network. You can start with as little as $0.05 per click. Some campaigns can also be managed via acquisition cost or cost per action, which is cheaper but takes time and skill to develop.

Spreading the word in the outside world can bring in those buyers into your virtual world. It takes a lot of hard work, but anything worth doing has always needed this  key element.

So let’s take it further: The more you see and the more you’re seen, the more you sell.
